Mitre’s Edge Wine Estate
Paarl | Cape Winelands | Western Cape
Mitre’s Edge Wine Estate is a family-owned boutique winery nestled at the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain between Paarl and Stellenbosch. Focused on small-batch, handcrafted wines, Mitre’s Edge is known for its Bordeaux-inspired varietals, careful vineyard management, and a deeply personal approach to winemaking.
A Boutique Estate at the Foot of the Simonsberg
Mitre’s Edge is set in a privileged location where mountain influence meets a temperate climate, creating ideal conditions for premium wine production. The estate is family-owned and managed, with Bernard and Lola Nicholls taking over the farm in 1999 from Lola’s father, Martin Hunting, who had farmed the land since 1969. Guided by Lola’s passion for Bordeaux-style wines, the vineyards were replanted with carefully selected clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, alongside Shiraz. To complement the red wines, Chenin Blanc and Viognier were also planted, allowing the estate to offer a balanced and thoughtful range.
Hands-On Winemaking & Attention to Detail
At Mitre’s Edge, quality is driven by hands-on involvement at every stage, from vineyard to bottle. Viticulture is overseen by consultant Danie Kritzinger of Agrimotion, with the vineyards personally cared for by Bertus de Clerk and his experienced team. This same attention carries through to the cellar, where winemaker Lola Nicholls handcrafts each wine in small quantities, ensuring consistency, character, and a strong sense of place. The result is a portfolio of award-winning boutique wines that reflect both the Simonsberg terroir and the dedication of the family behind Mitre’s Edge.
