Overgaauw Wine Estate
Stellenbosch | Cape Winelands | Western Cape
Overgaauw Wine Estate is a family-owned Stellenbosch winery renowned for producing classic, structured red wines that honour terroir while embracing innovation. With deep roots in the land and a pioneering spirit, Overgaauw has played a meaningful role in shaping South Africa’s fine wine landscape.
A Terroir Shaped by Stellenbosch & Bordeaux Influence
Overgaauw’s vineyards benefit from a unique position between mountain ranges and maritime influences, resulting in a diverse terroir of varied soil types and moderate summer temperatures. This environment closely mirrors that of France’s Bordeaux region, making it especially well suited to red wine production. A deep respect for terroir underpins everything at Overgaauw, with wines crafted to express their place rather than follow trends. The estate’s flagship reds, including Tria Corda, Merlot, and DC Classic, reflect this philosophy, combining Bordeaux-inspired structure with a distinctly Cape character.
A Legacy of Innovation & Family Stewardship
The Van Velden family has been at the forefront of innovation at Overgaauw from the very beginning. The estate was among the first in the Cape to mature red wines in small, new French oak barrels and produced South Africa’s first Bordeaux-style blend, Tria Corda, in 1979. In the early 1980s, Overgaauw again broke new ground by becoming the first South African estate to bottle a single-varietal Merlot. These milestones were not only defining moments for the estate but also contributed meaningfully to the evolution of the South African wine industry, cementing Overgaauw’s reputation as a producer of enduring, respected wines.
